A lot of things about “Titanfall 2” have been revealed, but the aspects that intrigued gamers the most are the new grappling hook addition to the multiplayer mode and the personality that the titan in the single-player campaign has been given. As to the latter, Brian Crecente at Polygon covered the developers’ journey in adding the single-player aspect to their title, which started out as purely multiplayer.
Game producer Drew McCoy talked about the challenges that the team faced when it came to converting a solely multiplayer platform to a game which now features single-player mode.
"When we sat down to make a single-player Titanfall game, we had an interesting situation for ourselves," he said. "We had a great multiplayer game with Titanfall. We found ourselves with the problem that we already knew how the game worked, but had to decide how to make it function in single-player."
Supposedly, the developer wasn’t counting on their users to be huge lore-buffs to get into Titanfall 2, particularly those who have not played the previous title. The sequel’s plot will take place several years after the first game, but the story will not be a continuation of Titanfall. Some old characters will make appearances, but the main focus will be on the new characters.
As for the single-player titan and pilot, McCoy said that the machine is not exactly sentient. However, the titan does have a personality of sorts and players will become very familiar with it.
Meanwhile, Chris Plante over at The Verge is more excited about the grappling hook feature for the multiplayer. Plante is a self-confessed casual when it comes to the title’s online PVP aspect and he points to the disadvantage that novice players face in terms of mobility when facing expert gamers.
“The hook finally gave me the benefits of verticality and speed, without requiring even half the skill,” he wrote.
